Dr. rer. nat. Alexander Pauli is a German scientist well known for his publications in microbiology. His review on anticandidal substances became the most viewed article "all time" being published in the same domain in Medline (BioMedLib notifications, since 2010). 

He studied food chemistry at the Institute of Pharmacy and Food Chemistry of the University Erlangen, Germany. From 1986 to 1988 he worked on mycotoxins in food at the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Hygiene at the same university, before joining the group under Professor Karl-Heinz Kubeczka (Pharmaceutical Biology at Julius-von-Sachs Institute, Würzburg University). Here he worked on the chemical synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of volatile phenylpropanes. The microbiological testing of compounds being found in essential oils was performed at the Institute of Hygiene and Microbiology (University of Würzburg). The interdisciplinary work was supported by the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation. Dr. Alexander Pauli gained his PhD in 1994 and started working independently on the pharmacological properties of phenylpropanes. Subsequently, he developed and produced a database on the antimicrobial properties of naturally occurring compounds and commercially available drugs, AmicBase. Since July 2011 the access to data of licensed drugs is free in the internet.
