Hopefully the nice predictions will become true. In December 2004 a new tournament with highly qualified teams has started - an experiment with unknown result for the organizers and players.

In the beginning of the tournament CBUC ranked only at position 51 of all teams and at the end at position 1. All team members scored at a high level as it was calculated in part by Marius Ceteras for GM Dr. Hans-Joachim Hofstetter (8,5 points from 10 games, elo-performance 2612 on board 1) and Dr. Alexander Pauli (9 from 10, elo-performance 2519 on board 4). IM Wilfred Nyberg (8,5 from 10 on board 2) and Manfred Wallinger (7,5 from 10 on board 3) completed the excellent team performance - only one of 40 games was lost.

The ChessBaseUserClub doesn't belong to the top teams among A1 qualifiers due to the lower ELO rating average of their team players. Ranking position is 8 only, however, the best teams are close together and nobody would be able to predict the three first palces, which qualifies for the ultimate A final.

What is the ChessBaseUserClub (CBUC) ? When ChessBase started in the early 1980s a small community of people decided to use the newly developed chess software to save games, built up database and to analyze games, openings etc. They organized themthelves under the name 'ChessBaseUserClub'. The first database was distributed by the founding members Dr. Hans-Joachim Hofstetter and Manfred Wallinger and it contained around 100.000 games. At peak time the number of CBUC members exceeded 100. Later, due to the easy distribution of chess games via internet, the original task of CBUC was overcome. In 1991 the members decided to form correspondence chess teams, of which four are active at the moment. Two internal club tournaments with strong participants have been organized. At the moment, the CBUC is qualified for the Bundesliga II (2003/04) and Final A of Correspondence Chess Champions League. In addition to the founding members IM Wilfred Nyberg plays both competitions. Günter Fiensch, the former board 4 in Bundesliga was followed by Dr. Harald Bittner (BL) and Dr. Alexander Pauli (CL) in the year 2002.
