Databases on Antimicrobials

Dear visitor,

first time, detailed antibiotic inhibitory data of licensed drugs of the major markets of Europe, Japan and USA is available in one data system via the internet. The database was named AmicBase Drugs-Online 2011 and is published for information and educational purposes.

AmicBase Drugs-Online is free - even a registration is not required ! Start here.

Antibiotics are essential for the treatment of infectious diseases. However, microbial resistances had developed against many drugs. To improve the situation not only new antibiotic developments are necessary also providing existing information on available drugs, their activities and microbial resistances is an important progress.

In AmicBase Drugs-Online 2011 information on over 600 licensed drugs having antimicrobial activity (antibiotics, antimycotics, antiseptics) is saved in over 79.000 documents. The database displays their trade names plus the countries, in which the trade names are in use, respectively. The number of microorganisms saved in the drugs database exceeds the number of 1.500. It is understandable, that a computer information system is needed to overlook the data situation. To arrange such information was another task to be solved, since various microbiological testing systems exist and, e.g., inhibitory concentrations are given in different formats and units. Some more details, such as abbreviations used, statistics, standardization procedures and more, are given in the manual.

In November 2011 about 9.300 data records on clinical breakpoints (MIC, inhibition zones) and susceptibility of pathogenic wild type microbial strains were added to
AmicBase Drugs-Online from EUCAST (European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing) data collection with permission . This allows data viewing of drugs having defined clinical breakpoints and comparison to data of drugs without having such definitions. In many cases activity ranges of a given drug towards pathogenic microbial species are displayed, which provide professionals a quick information on obtained lab results.

Revival
of antibiotics, such as temocillin, indicate the importance of sharing knowledge (reference, antibiotic spectrum). Recently, two fatal cases of ESBL Escherichia coli infections are reported - answering some natural questions would be desirable. Read more ...

AmicBase Drugs-Online 2011 derives from AmicBase 2006, which is the update of AmicBase 2005 (ISBN 0471743925). The 2005 version became temporarily a product of John Wiley & Sons. Previous versions (1999 to 2004) have been marketed by ReviewScience (Germany), the former company of the author of AmicBase, Dr. Alexander Pauli.
To complete the information on AmicBase, the current version has 200.700 data records dating from the year 2006. It displays therapeutic indices being calculated from microbiological inhibitory data and several kind of toxicological data. It is searchable for chemical structures and substructures combined with numeric or text searches (see Manual 2006). AmicBase 2006 is actually not available.
